Here are the top 10 key areas of focus in experience design that we believe will define our journey through this coming year.

1. Prioritizing Accessible Design

Though advocating for accessible design has often been a challenge, the landscape is finally shifting. Accessible design is finally starting to gain the recognition it deserves in Asia, prompting designers to re-evaluate their approach and consider challenges that were previously too easily overlooked. Embracing accessibility means crafting interfaces that serve a wider audience, bolstering usability for all. This requires attention to detail—considering structure, colour, labels, and assistive technology—to create universally accessible experiences. As the momentum for accessibility builds, experience designers are key in leading this inclusive transformation, ensuring digital solutions are accessible and meaningful for everyone.

2. Sustainable Design

UX and UI designers are increasingly leading the charge in weaving sustainable practices into the digital realm. Their role extends beyond sculpting seamless user journeys and refining information architecture; they play a pivotal role in enhancing the energy efficiency across a variety of devices. By crafting interfaces with visual simplicity, incorporating options like dark mode, and recommending eco-conscious colour palettes along with well optimised images and video, designers make strides in lowering energy demands. Considering the full lifecycle of a product, UX and UI professionals are uniquely positioned to deliver digital solutions that are not only intuitive and engaging but also environmentally responsible.

User research is often featured in our pitches and RFP responses, and we regularly champion its value. Yet, all too frequently, it falls prey to budget cuts, or the squeeze of tight timelines imposed by clients. While there's no one-size-fits-all solution, our commitment to the essential role of user research must remain firm. This could mean subtly integrating user research into our workflows or using guerrilla testing tactics to capture rapid insights—every effort counts. While Emotional design might be a new label to some, the question “how does it make you feel?” has frequently been asked in design. Emotional design goes beyond usability—it's about creating a connection with the user. In 2024, we continue to embrace the power of emotion in design, leveraging colour, typography, imagery, the written word and micro-interactions to evoke a response and build stronger relationships with the user. This human-centric approach to design is what transforms good products into great ones.

5. Loading Speeds

Loading speed, while often overlooked in design phases, is a crucial facet of UX/UI that significantly influences user experience, engagement, and conversion rates. UI designers can greatly enhance site performance through seemingly minor choices, such as choosing the right image file type (png vs. jpg, progressive vs. baseline, etc.), which can dramatically influence the performance metrics on tools like Lighthouse, tipping the scales from an average score to an exceptional one. With search engines prioritizing page speed, especially for the substantial mobile user base, fast loading is key to search visibility and user satisfaction across various contexts.
Designers must initiate performance discussions early, integrating developers and tech teams from the start for a clear understanding of the project scope. This collaborative approach allows for pre-emptive solutions to potential speed hurdles, streamlining the design process and leading to a more effective, user-focused outcome.

6. Data Privacy and Security

In an era where data breaches are all too common, data privacy and security are critical to user trust. For experience designers, their role in advocating and designing for privacy is significant and can lead to faster and more user-friendly interactions. Biometric integration, for example, offers convenience and efficiency, allowing swift access with a simple touch or glance. By implementing unobtrusive consent dialogs and transparent data policies, designers ensure users feel informed and in control—key to a positive customer experience. This level of customization elevates user engagement and satisfaction, as interfaces adapt in real-time, presenting information and options tailored to individual user behaviours. 9. More client meetings!

In the world of experience design, it's important that we pay attention not just to what users need, but also to the business goals behind a project. UX/UI designers should be involved from the start, sitting in on early meetings with clients to really understand their challenges and what they want to achieve.
Despite the ease of online meetings, they don't offer the same value as meeting face-to-face. We lose out on the nuanced aspects of in-person communication—the informal banter that precedes formal discussions, the expressive non-verbal cues, the palpable energy of a person entering the room, and the ability to sense underlying team dynamics. These details can make a big difference in our work. 

Therefore, as we look forward to the coming year, we are setting a goal to increase our face-to-face meetings with clients, ensuring the fullest understanding and the most effective collaboration.

10. Using AI in the design process

Last but by no means least, leveraging AI in the design process has been an exciting and transformative journey for us over the past year. The wide array of AI tools we use breathes life into projects, from offering page structure suggestions, enriching wireframes with contextually relevant content, moving beyond the placeholder text of Lorem Ipsum, creating detailed user personas, or predicting where a user's focus may lie on a page. Coupled with AI's ability to generate bespoke images, our design process is considered, experimental and creative. The integration of AI is not merely a work in progress but an exciting new wave reshaping how we envision and execute design, enhancing rather than threatening the designer's role.
